The Difference Between Fashion and Style

The Difference Between Fashion and Style

Although the terms fashion and style are often interlinked they are not the same thing. So what is the difference? Let’s look into this deeper:

The Definition Of Fashion

Fashion:   ‘a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behaviour

The Definition Of Style

Style: ‘a particular procedure by which something is done; a manner or way

As you can clearly see by the definitions fashion and style are not the same thing.

"Never confuse fashion with style. Fashion relies on unattainable looks on woman with unattainable bodies. Style is about utilizing the best aspects of you." - Stacy London

Breaking Down The Difference Between Fashion & Style

Fashion wants to steal the show, forcing the attention onto itself. Fashion is the clothes you wear. Style is how you put those clothing items together. Anyone can throw on a pair of jeans and a jumper, however making that combination look good is a different story. A person can be stylish but not fashionable, the same as a person can be fashionable but not stylish.

Unlike fashion, style draws attention to you. Style requires an artist flare, an eye for detail and a good knowledge of what clothing items work with others. In contrast, fashion requires a person to go shopping and buy the latest must-have outfit and then simply put it on. In the (alleged) words of Yves Saint Lauren “fashions fade, style is eternal

Style is something you choose that suits you and your body shape, fashion is whatever is available in the shops at that particular time.

Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose.” Lauren Hutton

Fashion can be worn by anyone, style is harder to steal. If you’re looking for a unique way to express yourself, style is the way to go.

 Fashion Is Ever-Changing

The clothing industry is the third biggest manufacturing industry in the world and one in three women consider an item that they’ve worn more than twice to be old. Fast-fashion is big business as fashion styles and trends are constantly changing. Designers regularly produce new ideas to encourage you to buy their latest design.

Here are some examples of past fashion trends:

  • Oversized hats
  • Sequins
  • Tie-dye
  • Puffed sleeves
  • Jumpsuits

Unlike style, fashion can be one item rather than looking at the outfit as a whole. New fashion trends can be incorporated into your style but they don’t make up the whole outfit. That’s where style comes in.

 Style Is Ever-Lasting

A good style never goes out of fashion. Style is the art of accumulating timeless pieces which can be reused again and again and then assembled in an aesthetic way. If you want to improve your style then capsule wardrobes are the way forward. Spend time finding good-quality pieces that you love, suit your body and you feel comfortable with.

 Some common personal styles include:

  • Bohemian
  • Vintage
  • Sexy
  • Casual
  • Sophisticated

 Fashion Is Generic

Being fashionable is something that any person can achieve. It’s available to anyone with a credit card. Fashion doesn’t require any skill you just need to go shopping and wear the items you’ve bought. As you walk down the street take note of how many people are wearing similar trends. The likelihood is you will notice a common thread amongst them. People that follow fashion don’t tend to stand out as everyone is doing it.

 Style is Individual

Unlike fashion, style focuses on individualism. It’s unique to the owner. It’s a way for a person to express themselves in a creative way. If you want to stand out from the crowd then style is the way forward.

Understanding Your Personal Style

Style is personal and unique to the individual. It’s a way for a person to express themselves through their clothing. There are lots of different styles out there, many are easily identifiable like the ones mentioned above.

Some individuals however opt for a more unique eclectic look. Mixing and matching items in such a way that their style becomes unique to them.  This type of personal style is the hardest to define and imitate as it can often change depending on the person's mood. Done right it can be very eye-catching, done wrong it can result in a mishmash of clothing making you look more like you left home in a hurry and don’t own a mirror.

How Fashion & Style Can Work Together

Although style is different from fashion the two can work well together. A person with great personal style often has a  capsule wardrobe containing a mixture of timeless pieces that all work well together. Every now and then they may wish to add a new fashion item into the mix to keep things interesting. The trick is knowing what to combine with what.

Tailor Your Style To Reflect Your Desires

Your personal style needs to reflect your desires. What sort of life do you want to live? You’ve heard the term ‘fake it before you make it'' right? Dress for the person you want to become. The right outfit can make you feel more confident and get you in the right mindset for the day ahead. After all we are what we wear

If you’re drawing a blank do some research online of popular clothing styles and see if any resonate with you. Try out a range of different styles until you find one you like and feels good on you. Don’t be afraid to try out new things. You never know you might come across a style you hadn’t considered before and fall in love with it.

You have to learn what you don’t like in order to know what you do like. Time and patience is the key to style success.

To summarise fashion is ever-changing, style is timeless. Fashion is short-lived, style is eternal. Whatever you view having a solid style will benefit your life in more ways than one. The question is do you follow fashion or choose style?
